Spooky season is here and we’re all feeling the hair raise on our arms as we think about things that go bump in the night (and likely enjoy a few too many pumpkin-spiced lattes)! If there’s one thing you don’t need to be scared about this Halloween season, however, it’s massage.

If you have some fears about getting a massage that has been holding you back from giving it a try, don’t worry. A lot of people find the idea of getting a massage scary, even if they enjoy their loved one giving them one or helping ease sore muscles.

The good news is these fears are unfounded and you can easily conquer them to have the most relaxing Halloween yet!

5 Common Massage Fears to Chase Away This Halloween

1. Getting a massage hurts!

A common misconception is that for massage to be effective at relieving tense muscles, it needs to be deep, potentially causing discomfort and pain. However, this is rarely the case!

What can be thought of as a ‘deep’ massage will vary from person to person, and unless you choose a deep tissue massage or a sports massage, your therapist will be focused on helping you relax, not finding and releasing every sore spot.

Remember, if you feel that your therapist is using more pressure than you would like, you simply must let them know and they’ll adjust the pressure so it’s just right. There are no medals for sticking it out when it’s painful and only you’ll know that you did – so be honest!

Our massage therapists will regularly check in with you to make sure that you are comfortable throughout your massage, so you’ll always have the opportunity to adjust the pressure.

2. The massage therapist will be horrified because I’m [fill in the blank]

Feel like you’re too old, overweight, freckly, or out of shape to get a massage? There is no need to feel embarrassed – massage therapists choose their profession because they are appreciative of the human body in all its forms and want to make people feel good. (That’s real, everyday people!) Experienced massage therapists have worked with people of all shapes and sizes, ages, and physical conditions. Massage is something that can be enjoyed by everyone with absolutely no judgment.

3. I have never had a massage, so I don’t know how to prepare

Lucky for you, there isn’t much you need to do to prepare for a massage! When you arrive for your session, we will simply ask you to fill out a form that can help us to develop the best treatment plan for you, including any pain you might be experiencing and what benefits you hope to receive from your massage.

You will then be asked to disrobe to a point that you feel most comfortable and get yourself ready on the table under the sheet. Then you can just lay back and enjoy your relaxing massage.

4. My skin is sensitive, so I am worried about reacting badly to massage oils and lotions

If you have sensitive skin or often react to new products, you are not alone. Simply express your concerns before your massage session and your therapist can use oils or lotions that are hypoallergenic and unscented to reduce your risk of skin irritation. We formulate our own massage cream and use only organic and or all natural products without parabens.

5. I feel uncomfortable at the thought of being naked around a stranger

Arguably, the top massage fear is having to be naked around a stranger. Our massage therapists are experienced with what is known as draping, which is where they only expose the area of the body being worked on, leaving the rest of the body covered with a sheet. Your privacy will be respected for the entirety of the massage so that you can feel comfortable.

Also remember that your massage therapist will only ask you to disrobe to a level that is comfortable to you, whether that be naked, leaving underwear on, or a little more clothing. You need to feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible during your massage, so if you want to leave on a little more clothing the first few times you have a massage, all you have to do is say so.
